How To Prevent Getting Injuries When Involved In Sports
Engaging in sports improve both your cardiovascular and immune systems. It also helps you develop discipline and self-confidence. There are many other benefits one can get from playing a sport. But alongside it, you're also at risk of getting injured. Fret not. You can minimize the risk of sustaining one by knowing effective means of preventing an injury.
Let's start with protective wear. Your head is very much susceptible to injury. So it's important to put on a helmet where wearing it is required. When buying one, see to it that it's specifically meant for the sport you're involved in. Different head protective equipment vary in terms of degree of protection given. For example, a ski helmet is not meant for playing football, and vice versa.
Don't buy something, say, for example a shiny black helmet with decals, only because it looks trendy. There are multi-functional helmets you can buy at sports shops. Buying one will come in handy if you're intending to try different sports at the same time. And it also lets you save on sports gears expenses.
There are sports which also require different protective gears to be worn on certain body parts. To name a few: eye goggles, mouth guards, and pads for the elbows and knees. For men, protective cups are essential. They're ideal for sports like baseball, football and wrestling.
Aside from wearing protective gears, you should take time to do some warm ups. It's wrong to just get into the court or field and start playing. Warming up prepares your muscles for a vigorous activity. It lengthens the muscles and increases the temperature by directing blood flow towards them.
Warming up helps minimize your risk for getting injured. So how do you properly warm up? Jog for 5 to 10 minutes to increase body temperature. Follow it with 10 to 15 minutes of stretching exercises. Then another 10 to 15 minutes of doing drills for the specific sport you are playing. Don a digital sport watch to see if you've warmed up for 20 to 30 minutes.
Now if you incurred an injury, it's best to take a break. If it's a serious one, have it checked by a professional. Some athletes can't wait to get back into sports, even when their recent injury hasn't completely healed yet. A recovering injury getting re-injured could end up really badly.
Of course getting hurt is part of playing sports, especially those of the contact kind. However, it doesn't always necessarily mean that you have to sustain an injury. Knowing proper preventive measures will help you, as well as your teammates and opponents, from injury.
