2006 Middle School Boys Lacrosse
Planning Meeting
Thursday, November 3rd at 7:00 p.m. Central Catholic Cafeteria
We will be selecting a new Board of Directors, or perhaps consider selecting a Commissioner, and set an agenda for future meetings, particularly the scheduling meeting. While Frank Lo Castro would like to remain involved with the Board, John Seekings, Dan Donnelly and Paul Matthews are moving on because of new lacrosse responsibilities and time constraints.
For the 2006 season to proceed smoothly, it will require the over sight of a handful of individuals from participating programs. Please consider volunteering for a spot on the Board. Feel free to contact John, Dan, Frank or Paul Matthews if you have questions or concerns. pmathews@navigatorprinting.com
NOTICE - The local chapter of US Lacrosse , formerly known as the Pittsburgh Lacrosse Foundation, is holding an organizational meeting on Tuesday, November 15, at 7:00 p.m. at the Sports Rock Cafe in Pittsburgh's Strip District.
The purpose of the meeting is to generally begin the process of  reevaluating (or defining) the role the chapter should play in the regional lacrosse community and specifically determining what events it should either sponsor or support for the coming season. They will also be looking for people who may want to serve in a board capacity.

WINTER INDOOR LACROSSE at SOUTHPOINTE
Fall Indoor Lacrosse at Southpointe will wrap up at the end of the month.
It has been tons of fun so Good To Go is offering another session this winter.  All players that are not playing in the Sewickley Under the bridge should take advantage of this program.  Football and Soccer will probably be over by then and I hope to see you all on Wednesday Nights in November.  I was very happy and surprised by how competitive this league has been and recommend that if you are not playing under the bridge that
you sign up. - Coach Doran

Letter to the WPSLA:

In past years the league has traditionally held a pre-season meeting. Attendance at the meeting has been traditionally low due to the up coming season. With this in mind, the board has elected to forego the pre-season meeting.

I would like to send along a friendly note on the upcoming season.  Allow me to climb onto my soap box.  Where to begin….

  1. I would like to remind everyone that the players are high school kids, give them the space and time to be just that - a high school kid!  Try to keep in mind how important the most trivial things are to a high school kid.  Finally, be sensitive to what the kids are experiencing, physically, emotionally and socially.  Being a teenager is not easy, think back to when you were one. (Some of us have to think back longer than others)
  1. Keep in mind everything we are doing is for the kids, not for the parents or coaches egos.  It is just a game.
  1. Remember coaches are teachers, lead by example be responsible in everyway.  The team’s personality usually directly reflects the coaches’ personality and attitude.

   4.   Officials are human and they make mistakes - no one is perfect. Coaches make countless mistakes every game and most of the time they go unnoticed; officials do not have that luxury.  Most times when an official makes a mistake they are verbally abused by players, coaches and parents.  Mistakes happen, live with it and move on. Remember without officials there would be no games.

  1. Most of us played sports as kids because they were fun. Now as adults we coach sports because we love the sport and the competition. Are your players having fun? Are you teaching them to love the game?
  1. We expect our players to work hard and improve everyday; make sure you do the same.  Attend coachs’ clinics, keep current with coaching techniques, and be prepared for every practice and game.
  1. Remember we are not competing to be ranked #1 in the College Football Rankings, and hopefully we are not worried about where Lax Power is ranking our teams.  Be respectful of the opposing team, do not embarrass yourself, your school and the league by running up scores and “rubbing it in” at the expense of the other team.  If you have an issue with the opposing school, fans or coach do not take it out on the kids.  Nobody wins when teams embarrass other teams.  Be respectful of your opponents.
  1. As a native Pittsburgher (yunzer if you will) I dreamed of college lacrosse coming to Pittsburgh.  Many people said it would never happen in my life time.  College lacrosse is here!  Now support it and encourage your players to attend games.  They will learn something.

 W&J  http://www.washjeff.edu/content.aspx?section=2518&menu_id=588&crumb=589&id=836

  1. Do not forget to evaluate the game officials after every game.  This is a very important process if we as coaches want the officials to improve in Pittsburgh.  I know everyone is busy and this is a crazy time of year, but it is part of your job to evaluate the officials.  The link to the evaluation form is on the league’s website http://www.wpsla.org/  click the “rate your refs” link. New coaches should write to Darrell or Jeff for the password.
  1.  Check the league’s website to ensure all of your schools information is accurate, i.e. coaches’ contact information and game schedule and times.  Do not forget to notify Jeff Dreisbach wvulax@verizon.net of any contact or schedule changes that occur during the season.
  1. Please report your game score and information to Jeff Dreisbach  wvulax@verizon.net after every game. For correct format procedure go to the league’s website http://www.wpsla.org/format.htm . Again, I know everyone is busy and this is a crazy time of year, but it is part of your job to report game scores to the league.
  1. Good luck this season

Any questions or comments please feel free to contact any board member

Respectively,

 Darrell C. Schmitt, Pres. WPSLA
