To the WPSLA Membership:
I thought it would be prudent to
take some time to address the tragic event that occurred
during the Cornell/Binghamton lacrosse game this past Wednesday.
As you all probably know 22 year old George Boiardi
was killed when he was struck by a shot in the chest
with 2:33 remaining in the game. All efforts to revive
him failed.
Dangers do exist in the sport of lacrosse. If memory
serves me correctly this is the 4th or 5th person to have
died playing the sport in the past 20 years. All of the
deaths were a result of receiving a shot to the chest thus
causing the heart to fail. This is the first defenseman that
this happened to. The others were goalies. Bear in mind that this
is a very low number of deaths and doesn't even reach the radar
screen for concern.
Since the last death, 4 years ago, the equipment manufacturers
improved the quality of the the goalie chest
protector.
As a group the WPSLA needs to make sure we are taking
the proper precautions to ensure the health and safety
of our players. We have the following procedures in
place:
- According to our Rules & Regulations-
Emergency medical services including a doctor or paramedic
and other personnel trained in first aid and emergency
care, on site for the entire contest, and ambulance service
readily available. Failure to provide emergency medical
services will result in home team forfeit, and the game will
not be played.
- All coaches are required to certified in CPR and
First Aid.
Recommended precautions:
- It is strongly recommended that each school have
a Defibrillator on site.
- Make sure that your players are properly equipped!!!!!
Most players do not like wearing shoulder pads. In fact,
most college players will wear what is referred
to as a shoulder pad liner. The standard shoulder
pad that is made by Warrior, STX, Brine, etc. cover the shoulder
and go down to just above the stomach. Some, if not all,
have an extra piece that velcro's in to double up the padding
at the sternum. The shoulder pad liner DOES NOT provide
this type of protection.
The entire lacrosse
world is grieving. Let's learn from this and be proactive
to eliminate such tragedies.
Have a safe and injury
free season.
FYI- I just learned
that this death was a real fluke. The ball hit the
player causing a rib to break and the rib severed the
aorta.
