Pittsburgh, PA - Oct. 17 - Members of the
WPSLA held their organizational meeting for the 2002 season last night at
Mt. Lebanon High School. Brian Novotny (Franklin Regional), Jon
Moriarty (Peters Township), Wayne Jaeckle (North Allegheny), and
Bruce Phillips (Trinity) were elected to comprise the Executive Board
for the upcoming season. They will meet at a later date to decide who will
be President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Divisional Representatives
were also elected to round out the Executive Board. Tim Hastings (Sewickley)
will represent Division 1, Bob Karn (North Hills) will represent Division
2 and Ken Sines (Seneca Valley) for Division 3.
The three divisions were realigned
to accommodate the growth and talent of the league.
The next meeting scheduled for Tuesday, November 20th, will be for scheduling and other business. The meeting site will be announced later.
Jon Moriarty has notified me that Bruce Phillips and Wayne Jaekle are no longer coaching at Trinity and North Allegheny, respectively. Changes in the WPSLA Directory have been made accordingly. - Ed.
The classes will be offered in the following sequence:
Mar. 30 - Sewickley Academy's game today vs. Davidson Hilliard has been moved to Upper St. Clair's field ( directions ) due to Sewickleys's field being under water. The game will be at 3:00 p.m. USC hosts Erie Spears at 1:00 p.m., so why not make it a lacrosse afternoon and catch both games.
Peters Township, PA - April 2 - The Franklin Regional Panthers opened their season with a close 11-10 win over Peters Township. Stu Shaginaw led the team with 4 successful face-offs. Ground balls were lifted by Josh Kurz, 5, Cory Harrigan, 3, and Matt Hagen 3, to keep the Panthers in possession. Neal Paulisic played a solid defensive game with 23 saves .
Sewickley, PA - April 16 - Sewickley Academy lost to Franklin Regional 13-8 in a hard fought defensive struggle Tuesday. Franklin's goalie Neal Paulisik remained strong in the nets with 25 saves on 33 shots. Sewickley led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter but never recovered from the Panthers second quarter scoring rush when Franklin's Josh Kurz, Jordan Yearsley and Ryan Putnam put in a total 5 goals. Dane Surdoval played terrific defense at long pole and was awarded the game ball by Coach Brian Novotny . Always the strong player, midfielder Zach Heyl forced 3 turnovers, won 6 of 10 faceoffs in the first half, and scored 2 goals to help the team beat the defending WPSLA champs . - Franklin Regional
Wexford, PA - April 23 - North Allegheny
's senior attackman Brandon Beeken reached a milestone in his lacrosse
career by scoring his 200th point on Monday night. Beeken's tally came on
an assist to sophomore Chris Wojciak in NA's 13-10 victory over
Central Catholic. North Allegheny charged out the gates to take a 6-1
lead over Central Catholic. However, Central fought back to take a 10-9 lead
over the Tigers at the end of three quarters. The Tigers then rallied
in the fourth quarter with goals by Chris Wojciak, Jon Meteny, Derek Polecritti,
and Beeken along with a fine defensive effort that limited the Vikings
to only 3 shots in the final stanza to secure the victory. NA improves
to 8-2 on the season and Central Catholic takes their first loss in the WPSLA
to fall to 9-2.
(But you wouldn't know that Central Catholic is 9-2 if you checked the
standings on the website, because they have reported nothing to the
webmaster
; which is why wpsla.org continues to be the "Semi-Official Record of the
WPSLA" - Ed.)
Zelienople, PA - April 24 - For the
first time in team history, Seneca Valley has reached the .500 mark,
thanks to a 10-6 victory over division rival North Catholic. The

win over the Trojans. Leading the Seneca Valley attack was sophomore attackman
Chad Melberg with 5 goals and an assist. Freshman Peet Pollion and
Ryan Yanicko both chipped in 2 goals apiece. Melberg and Pollion are now tied
for the team scoring lead with 20 points each (Melberg 17g 3a, Pollion 11g
9a). North Catholic was lead by senior attackman Brian Kane who picked
up 3 goals in the loss. Up next for Seneca Valley is a May 1st division game
at Baldwin.
North Park, PA - May 4 - North Catholic won their second game in a row against Morgantown 9-6 on Thursday. Offensive production was led by attackman Brian Kane who had 5 goals on the day to help hold off a late surge by the Mohigans.

Wexford, PA - May 12 - Sewickley Academy
wins lacrosse games. North Allegheny wins football games.
Such are the expectations and traditions that are a part of the sports heritage
at these two fine high schools in western Pennsylvania. However, on
a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Newman Stadium, North Allegheny's
2002 team did something no other Tiger team has ever done--they beat Sewickley
in a lacrosse game. Playing inspired defense and a smart transition game,
the Tigers battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the 2nd quarter to subdue the
Panthers 6-5 at game's end.
NA's core defensive unit of Matt Hodgdon, Sean Voithofer,
Brendan Coleman, Mike Grant, Justin Rice and Goalie Scott Heyl
played great team defense to spearhead the win in limiting Sewickley to
only 5 goals. Dan Palchak, Ryan Sarel, Dan Stypula and Gene
Cozza also played good defense from their midfield positions.
On the offensive end, NA outshot Sewickley 41-28 with
Senior Co-Captain Brandon Beeken beating Sewickley's outstanding goalie,
A.J. Jayson, for 3 goals. Sophomore Tim Huckestein and Senior
Gene Cozza also scored along with Derek Polecritti who put in
the eventual game winner on a feed from Chris Wojciak near the end
of the third quarter. - Scott Beeken - North Allegheny
