Super Bowl XLV Sets An All-time Viewership High
Super Bowl XLV sent the Nielsen ratings tumblers spinning out of control. The Washington Post reports the competition between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers drew a TV record one hundred and eleven million viewers as the most-watched program in U.S. television history. Super Bowl XLIV drew 106.5 million TV viewers last year, while the non-Super Bowl champ - the 1983 season finale of “M*A*S*H” - drew 106 million.
Number of individuals tuned into the Super Bowl
There were 162.9 million people that viewed the Super bowl XLV according to some media. The actual viewers are not represented by that number that is really a “reach” number advertisers can use. Six minutes or less was viewed by those people. The 111 million figures are for viewers who stuck around longer, even through the performance of the Black Eyed Peas during the Super Bowl halftime show.
Different audiences for football and ‘Glee’
After the game got over, most viewers tuned out. This was the case even though a new episode of “Glee” was playing. After the game got over, 84 million of the one hundred and eleven million got out, says Nielsen Media Research. In 2010 when the reality show “Undercover Boss” was played, there were 39 million viewers that stuck around although there were only 27 million viewers this year after the Super Bowl for CBS. For the top two Super Bowl programs in history, neither got close. In 2001, an episode of “Survivor: The Australian Outback,” got 45 million viewers. Then, there were 53 million viewers willing to stay after and watch an episode of “Friends” in 1996.
Possible effect of audience die off was the East Coast
It is believed that much of the drop-off following the Super Bowl had to do with the start time for “Glee.”. Because of the Super Bowl XLV post-game show, “Glee” started at 10:30 p.m. Eastern. In the Eastern time zone, much of the country was likely going to bed. The audience that Nielsen markets rate was about to sleep then.
