2011 Pittsburgh Pirates "Me And My Gang"
Oregon State Season Wrap 2009
Oregon State fans do not need more reasons to hate Oregon. The in-state rival Ducks and Beavers play a yearly series entitled the Civil War. It divides the state, sometimes along family lines, and is one of the more underrated rivalries in all of college sports. Both teams have rarely been among the elite at the same time, but in recent years the football rivalry has had a lot rising on it. In both 2008 and 2009 Oregon State went into the Civil War game needing a victory over the Ducks in order to secure their first Rose Bowl berth since the 1960's. Both times, the Ducks denied them. What hurt even more in 2009 is that the Ducks got to go in their place.
That has made some of the Oregon State accomplishments on the field somewhat bittersweet. Running back Jacquizz Rodgers had a monster season running the ball this year. He was among the nation's best running backs with 1,440 yards and an amazing 21 touchdowns. Sean Canfield also completed 303 passes for 3,271 yards and 21 touchdowns against a modest seven interceptions. Those are great numbers, but Oregon State missed out on several chances to secure a Rose Bowl berth before facing the Ducks. Their final record was 8-5, but could have been much more.
The Beavers started the season with an easy 34-7 win at home over Portland State. A tricky road trip to Las Vegas followed, but the Beavers came out of Sin City with a 23-21 win over UNLV. The returned home to one of the more underrated non-conference games this year, as Big East champ Cincinnati crossed the country to visit them. The Bearcats had a successful visit winning 28-18 and sending the Beavers into Pac-10 play at 2-1 overall.
Pac-10 play did not start well either. Oregon State struggled at home once again and dropped a 37-32 decision to a resurgent Arizona squad. Oregon State then went into the desert and came out with a 28-17 win over Arizona State. They next grabbed a key tiebreaker in the Pac-10 race by knocking off Stanford 38-28 before heading to USC. The Trojans had a grudge to settle, as their only Pac-10 loss in 2008 came at Oregon State. USC settled that grudge by holding on against a late Beaver rally for a 42-36 win. With two losses in conference play, it appeared the Beavers were done, but they got tons of help from around the conference.
Oregon State reeled of four straight wins over UCLA (26-19), California (31-14), Washington (48-21), and Washington State (42-10) as everything else in the conference fell apart around them. USC, Stanford, and Arizona all fell out of the race, leaving the Beavers trailing Oregon by one game going into the Civil War. A Beaver victory would give them the tiebreaker and conference title, but the Ducks prevailed at home 37-33 thanks to a late defensive stand. BYU then added to the misery in the Las Vegas Bowl with a 44-20 win.

Frequently Asked Questions...
Have you lost hope for the Pittsburgh Pirates?
At least Pittsburgh still has the Penguins and the Steelers.
After the Pirates LOST 20-0 I've officially gave up hope.
We don't even deserve to be a major league baseball team.
Answer:
That depends on what you're hoping for. If it is a winning season in 2010, forget it, not going to happen. Highly unlikely in 2011 as well.
Assuming that most of the prospects turn out to be decent major leaguers, don't expect ANYTHING from this club until 2012 at the earliest. And it won't be until 2013 that they could possibly contend. Keep in mind that is IF most of the prospects pan out.
If the prospects don't pan out, the Buccos just shot at least another 7 years in the rear end. But at this point, what is another 7 years of awful baseball. The Pirates would definitely make history be if they had losing seasons for that long (25 years). It would be a record that would never be broken.
We won't know if their moves were good ones until the 2012 season. By that time these players should be in the majors. If they have not arrived by then, it will be the same old story, like McCutcheon as a Met,Red Sox, Yankee, etc.
The Pirates tore it all the way down and are finally rebuilding from the bottom up. Now we get to see if Coonelly and "Wheel and Deal" Neal Huntington can evaluate talent. If they can't, I will have lost all hope after the 2012 season.
