Trigeminal Neuralgia, a Scottish Playboy, The NFL Ravens, A Greek Captain and A Welsh Auditor Touched by Chinese Medicine aboard a Caribbean Cruise

Sunday 0805, Embarkation Day morning – Solstice My Love Chapter 6.
Like the Katana - the famous samurai sword - I'm going through processes of melting, solidification and annealing. A constant emotional and mental rollercoaster. What follows are some of the meetings that took place during a one week Cruise.
Last Sunday, I met John S, a solid, bespectacled Scotsman. He immediately read my name from the tag without any accent and exposed my Israeli identity. I am displayed as an American on my name tag due to my dual citizenship. He declared himself to be the grandson of the cousin of none other than the legendary British officer Ord Wingate. Later, before one of the seminars I presented at Michael's Club, we met again. He was in the midst of passionately playing the piano. He is a very gifted player so when he saw me enter he switched to the Israeli Anthem and a few more songs from the film Exodus - which brought some tears of longing to my eyes.
On another day we met again, at the Aqua Spa Café, which represents the first effort to serve health food on a cruise ship. There he told me, over the course of about twenty minutes, of Wingate's exploits in Israel, Ethiopia and Burma... until he was killed in a plane crash.
He did not come for a treatment nor even for a consultation but at the end of the cruise he asked for my email address. In a very amusing but also very well written manner he told me of his experiences as a boxer, as a writer and as a Casanova-style lover. We agreed to meet again one day over a few beers in a British pub…
Susan, who runs a successful real estate business, came to get help in losing weight. At the end of the procedure, she was treated to strengthen the digestive system and received medical advice regarding why her husband refuses to have sexual relations with her. This morning, when she was out with her suitcases, we met by chance and she hugged me warmly and managed to ask another professional question while at it…
Lorna and Lucy are Canadian partners. Their week started with complaints about high stress. Lorna is a tough school principal and Lucy is a relaxed young chef. Lorna admitted at the end of the procedure that she hasn't felt so good in a very long time. We spoke about the meaning of the word "respect" and about their lives and I was invited to their wedding in Montreal in the coming summer.
Brian came to the Solstice with 200 other insurance agents. In the mornings they had lectures and the rest of the time was dedicated to fun. Brian is one of the best insurance millionaires nationwide. He is only 39 and plans to marry his very young girlfriend in three months time. Brian is a strong man and very muscular. He wanted quick results in treating weight gain and stress in order to reach his peak for the wedding. I had cooperated fully with him and he was treated more strongly than usual. He was released from his shoulder pain and rigidity by the fourth treatment. I appreciated his strong will and great stamina.
Brian is the only patient I ever had who tried to sell me an insurance policy while being treated ...
Acupuncture treatments are very effective on the ship. Martin thinks this is because we are in a metal or still body going through salt water and therefore the electrical conductivity of the needles is high.
During the week, in the midst of a seminar I was presenting with Dana, my mobile phone rang. As I was giving the presentation I gave the phone to Dana who went out to speak. She returned, requested forgiveness of those present and announced that I was required by Anna to go immediately to the spa to treat an emergency case. I left everything to Dana and ran all the way from deck 5 at the back of the ship, where the seminar was being held, to the bow where the spa is, at deck 12.
I arrived panting to the desk behind which Anna sat and she gestured to the guest. A woman of about 55, thin and tall, sitting nervously in a chair in the reception area. Anna noted that she thinks the guest has a headache. No one had offered her an intake form for Chinese Medicine or asked her anything in order to find out exactly what she has. Apparently they were all too busy, as I remembered lots of people were waiting in the reception area.
I went to the seated woman, introduced myself and asked her what the problem is. Dorothy replied that she was experiencing acute attacks of Trigeminal Neuralgia, a disease also called "the suicide disease". The Trigeminal nerve, with its three heads, causes severe pain to the face, sharp pains as if cut with a sharp knife. I could see very clearly the attack that followed her words which made her face squirm with pain.
Without waiting another second I held her hand, read her pulse while leading her walking quickly towards the treatment room. During all this I also saw her tongue. I diagnosed blood and Chi deficiency and over activity of the liver and gallbladder. There was a very taut bowstring pulse and a scalloped pale tongue covered with a thick yellow coating. I did not pause to begin registration of the intake form and right away helped her lie down on the treatment bed. I started immediately with Acupuncture. I asked a few quick questions while I was inserting the biggest needles following the three legs of the rebellious Trigeminal Nerve. "To chase the dragon's tail" this Acupuncture technique is called by the Chinese. I worked fast and hard for a long time while she did not stop twitching and screaming in pain and begging me to help her and stop her agony. Not once did she request me to stop what I did. I was very calm, focused and relaxed the best I could.
Every time the pain subsided, she checked the result by touching her tongue to her palate. Tongue touching the palate combines two main meridians in the body called Du and Ren. Like an electrical switch "short" this led to a new wave of seizures and wails. Despite all my attempts I could not get her to stop the "quality checks" conducted so involuntarily with each pause.
After about half an hour of particularly powerful Acupuncture and more twitches of pain there was a relief of five full minutes. I turned to the treatment table and located the appropriate Chinese Herbal remedy for her. While the needles were in her face she trustingly took the capsules of herbs I offered. I was glad that we have sinks and glasses in the treatment rooms.
The treatment continued and the seizures repeated. And treatment continued. And the seizures returned. At times it seemed like a process of removing an obsession or a scene from the movie The Exorcist. Slowly I added Acupuncture needles to points in the hands, legs and toes. I removed and inserted new needles nonstop. Despite the fact that the attacks lasted I would not give up or stop, even for a moment. This brave woman chose to be treated by Chinese Medicine and had waited until I got back from the seminar, enduring enormous pain. She trusted me instead of going to the doctor and getting western medications that probably would immediately resolve the pain. How could I not give her the best service I was able to grant? To my surprise, I drew much strength from her belief. I could not disappoint her.
Dorothy, on her part, managed between attacks to tell me that she was very tense because she is on the cruise with 44 other people, all belonging to the church they attend and she is the organizer and leader as for their activities onboard. That put her under a lot of stress. I asked who knew about the attacks and that she had gone for treatment with Acupuncture. As I suspected, she replied that nobody did. She did not want me to locate her husband, preferring to ask the help of her sister who was onboard. I found her sister's room, called her and asked her to come and take Dorothy to her cabin. Once I had called her sister Dorothy began to relax more and catch her breath.
I phoned reception from the treatment room, gave Dorothy's room number and asked the desk to issue a bill for a single treatment and herbs. While I was reciting the dosage required of the herbs, I asked Dorothy to come for a follow up treatment the next day. It was only after a long time she calmed down totally. With my help she got up slowly from the bed, apprehensively supported and we both walked slowly into the waiting area. Her eyes lit up when she saw her worried sister.
It is very rare in Chinese Medicine to treat such a problematic disease in its acute phase. Usually patients come between seizures to work with us on prevention and the root of the problem. My previous experience gathered in China and Japan helped to demonstrate the confidence and determination needed in an acute case like this when a patient is screaming and twitching with agony throughout the whole treatment. Saying that, it is impossible not to appreciate and respect the courage and faith in Chinese Medicine of this unforgettable woman.
The next day she arrived as we had agreed. I asked her to fill out the intake questionnaire, diagnosed her again and I asked her how was the last day. It turns out that after the treatment she immediately fell asleep, exhausted and relaxed. But at three in the morning the phone rang in her cabin and she had a single attack following this call. It had been directed to her room by mistake...
Beyond this attack there were no seizures. The next day Dorothy was very calm and very happy. I sent her to her cabin after the treatment and offered her other herbs to take home to treat the root problems. I gave her my mobile number and asked her if there were more attacks during the rest of the cruise to come at once and to call me any time even outside official working hours. She did not return.
Nazel, a young and proud gay man of Filipino descent works as a barber at the salon in the spa. I went to him to fix the haircut I had done for myself. He sends the money he earns to his sister who is studying law back home. When she is done with her studies he wants to open a luxury spa with her in Manila. I treat other workers in the spa with Acupuncture free of charge and may receive their services too. The herbs are provided at a very large discount. I also received an amazing massage from Michelle the American massage therapist and I referred some of my patients to her.
Amanda, 32, a charming and intelligent woman, was referred to me through the desk. She introduced herself as a travel agent who had come alone to explore possibilities of cruising for her customers. The chemistry was immediate and the treatment went well. She was very open to me regarding many of her personal problems.
A few hours earlier in San Martin, I met Martin with several other Acupuncturists from other ships. Martin works for the company that employs me and travels the world 320 days a year visiting acupuncturists who work at sea onboard a hundred ships. That day in San Martin six Cruise ships docked together, so this was a good opportunity to meet him. It was a very good meeting and it influenced my work for all the duration I have work onboard ships.
Amanda firmly refused my offer to take home herbs but has signed for a package of 5 treatments. The following treatment was suppose to be on the next day at four in the afternoon.
The next day around 3pm I saw Amanda standing next to Anna's office, instead of sitting in the waiting room. Before I could speak she extended her hand and asked to introduce herself. She said all of the information given to me was correct except that she is not a travel agent but a visiting auditor of the company that employs me.
Apparently she was not sent specifically to only check me out, but she randomly checked other therapists at the spa, without identifying herself. Still I suspect she came for me because of the complaints from Anna and since she did not go for a treatment with Dana… The treatment successfully passed the audit in terms of Chinese Medicine, customer service etc. Her comments were mainly about the marketing of the herbs. Although I suggested to continue with the treatments she had refused politely. I had offered to do that because I genuinely wanted to help her, although I knew that I was not suppose to get paid for services provided for the company's visiting executives…
One morning, before landing inHaiti, I scheduled to give a treatment at 0715 because the patient wanted to go off to the beach right after landing at 0800 to be the first one to take the Zip Line. At 0615 I arrived at the deserted spa to check on the computer and see the schedule for the day. I saw a tall, solid man wandering around the desk. Ed said that he wanted a haircut, so right away I made an appointment for him at 0830 with Nazel. Ed was an incredibly nice man who immediately joked about losing his hair. We had a nice chat and suddenly I noticed that he had one eye with an internal hemorrhage. Ten minutes later he completed the intake form and lay down for a treatment. At noon he brought his wife for a treatment too. As Ed works for the American Football NFL team the Baltimore Ravens, our conversations revolved around the subject and we rolled about laughing with the funny stories concerning NFL players and managers.
His wife was treated for Arthritic knee pain and back pain which had been bothering her mind for long time. She felt instant relief from the first treatment onwards. They expressed their gratitude with a generous tip and gave me a very high quality white Ravens team T-shirt. This shirt has since traveled a long way with me and has accompanied me faithfully on special occasions, until returning with me to Tel Aviv.
Yesterday, I presented a seminar about Arthritis (joint disease) and our way of dealing with such problems. The seminar began at 1130 and at 1200 the Captain came over the loudspeakers, as he does every day for about five minutes. I had to stop the seminar at its peak and by then it was already difficult to get the audience to concentrate. A few minutes later I packed everything up and went on my way back to the spa. Suddenly I noticed the Captain, Staff Captain and his Deputy walk towards me.
The Staff Captain and Deputy I had met already at the Captain Club reception so we have already said "hello" to each other long ago, but the Captain I'd never met - only seen from a distance. The Captain is a very impressive and handsome man - tall, smiling, relaxed and mostly funny. Staff and Deputy look like two pillars of strength. Short, plump and seemingly shy but firm. I cordially shook hands with the Captain and he immediately realized that I was from Israel and told me we were neighbors from the Mediterranean and even shared with me that his daughter is called Effi too, short for Iphigenia or something similar. From there it kept getting more amusing as I expressed my wish to join the onboard Greek mafia. This statement provoked squeals of laughter and joy among all three officers.
The Captain is always joking with the guests about the Greek origin of the top officers onboard. But it is of course a source of a lot of national pride. I added modestly that I am a skipper with a commercial license, limited to 54 passengers only…but I promised to close the gap. Seriously I said that I understand what they go through every sea voyage, so I invited all three of them for a free treatment to relieve stress. I "diagnosed" the Captain by pressing lightly on his tense shoulders, and he in turn admitted he was afraid of needles but he trusts me - unlike his feelings about the other, younger staff at the spa. They promised to come for treatment soon. A Captain aboard a Cruise ship has a god-like status and has almost unlimited powers.
