PIAA Questions & Answers:

  1. Will there be a limit to the number of games and scrimmages? Yes
    1. If so how many of each? 2
    2. When will the season start- i.e.: 1st practice? See attached
  2. Will teams be permitted to compete against teams in other Districts, non-varsity club, states or non-PIAA members? Yes and No.  PIAA schools may compete against non-member schools so long as they enter into a “Supplement to Contract”.  The contract provides that the non-member school agrees to compete under PIAA eligibility requirements.  PIAA schools may also compete against school club programs that are controlled by the school (i.e. student receive pre-participation physical evaluations; principal certifies to the eligibility of the students; etc.)  PIAA schools may not compete against club programs that do not have an affiliation with a school.  Interscholastic competition is defined as competition between schools.
    1. If so how many games? At the discretion of the school (but not more than the 20 Contest maximum).
    2. Will these games count against the season limit? Yes.
  3. Will there be District championships in the 1st year? Cannot answer this question.  District events are under the control of each PIAA District Committee.
    1. If not the 1st year then when? See first part of question 3.
    2. What is the required number of teams to have a District Championship? See first part of question 3.
  4. Will there be a state championship in the 1st year? (FYI- we currently have one the 1st weekend in June at Hershey Park Stadium) This is at the discretion of the PIAA Board of Directors.  If there is enough support at the Board of Directors level to sponsor a championship, it must pass 2/3 of the Board (20 members).
    1. If not the 1st year then when? See first part of question 4.
    2. If so- will each District send a team? PIAA sponsors tournaments which are representational tournaments.  Traditionally, Districts receive a proportional representation of the total number of qualifiers based on the proportion of school offering the sport in their district vs. the entire state.  In other words…if a 100 schools sponsor the sport of boy’s lacrosse.  25 schools are in District III.  District III would then receive 25% of the total number of qualifiers to the tournament.
    3. What will be the selection process if not by District? N/A.
    4. If the PIAA will not sponsor state championship can the PSLA continue their championship as we have with current format Eastern, Central and Western play-offs leading to state champion until such time as PIAA wants to sponsor championship?  Yes.  The PSLA could continue to sponsor a statewide event so long as it is completed by the Regular Season deadline and schools do not compete in more than the maximum number of contests (20) by competing in the event.  This is not uncommon.  The PA HS Water Polo Coaches Association sponsors a statewide tournament and the PA Track & Field Coaches Association sponsors an indoor statewide event.
  5. Will Fall and Winter practices and scrimmages be permitted? Not as the high school team.  Please see Article XVI: Season Out-Of-Season Rules and Regulations of the PIAA By-Laws.
    1. If so how long and how many? N/A
  6. Will there be a roster limit? No.  This is at the discretion of each school.
    1. If so how many players?
  7. Will the NFHS rules be adopted? Yes.
  8. Will all District & All State awards be given? PIAA has no affiliation with any All-State or All-District awards presented in any sport.
    1. If so who will select? N/A
